West Meon Rifle Club started in March 1953 as a Boy Scout Rifle Club. As now, it was an expensive sport , and so was opened up to members of the village in December 1953. It was supported mainly by the farming community , especially by four brothers in one family, and a cousin who later became President. The local Drill Hall was used by permission of the TA, until it was sold and demolished for housing. Then, to keep the club operating, one team shot all matches away, and the other team shot home matches at Wickham range. As this was not ideal, it was suggested that a range be built, and the Parish Council gave permission to build on the Village Hall site. The necessary funds came from a share of proceeds from the West Meon Show, which ran for a number of years with West Meon Sports Club, who also had a scheme fora pavilion. A member of the club, a partner in a local building firm, kindly undertook the planning and organisation of the self-build work by members, who gave over 2000 hours of their time. The range was completed in 1977. In 2003, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary with a reunion party in the Sports Club; both the Secretary and Treasurer at that time had held office since the inaugural meeting. The present Secretary took office in 2007, but the Treasurer continues unchanged. At one time, the club had an unbeatable record for winning at tile shooting (breakable discs), the secret being to use Polo mints for practice, supplied by the Treasurer who sold them in his shop. Last season, the club again did well, winning the Individual and Pairs |
