West Meon has two tennis courts set behind the Recreation Ground. The senior tennis section members meet for an annual tournament in July and also play social tennis. The very active junior section holds coaching sessions on a variety of nights during the summer for beginners and those looking to improve their skills. There is also a tennis practice wall to the West end of the pavilion. Further details can be obtained from Sarah Poole. Tel: 829420 Tennis 2008
The annual adult tennis tournament took place on Saturday 12th July. There were more players this year than in previous years and quite a few 16+ boys entered as well, which was good to see. The weather was typical of this time of year, cold, overcast and windy. The spectators were not put off though and the picnic rugs served well as blankets to keep out the cold! Play started with the men's singles knockout tournament. There were 12 entrants, which resulted in three making it to the semi final. Neil McCloud drew the bye to the final leaving Jake Jacobs to play Tim Haynes for a place in the final. Jake won this match and faced Neil in the final, a real battle of youth over experience. The match was close with Jake playing some superb shots but continually finding the ball being returned by the very clever shots produced by Neil. A tight match to the end but Jake finally found a way through and secured a much deserved win. Mixed Doubles Winners In the mixed competition, Neil McCloud got his revenge as he and his partner, Sarah Poole made it to the final to face Jake and his partner Susie. Another closely fought match but Neil and Sarah clinched the win. The Ladies doubles was a very small affair with only four couples entering. Lucy Savage and Jane Waller beat Emily Waller and Alex Gregory in the final. Despite the weather, a Barbeque was lit and wonderful food cooked by Rory St Ledger and Mary Edwards was enjoyed by the players after the competition. A very big thank you to John Fairey (Chair of the tennis club) and Jackie Goulding for organising the tournament and making sure everything ran smoothly on the day.
