Living Paintings is a unique and free national service for blind and partially sighted children and adults that many actors and broadcasters are pleased to lend their voices to. One album that is particularly popular with adult library members is our British Birds Album featuring twelve raised images with detailed description that builds beautiful imagery and is accompanied by the birdsong of each subject. A range of over 120 popular children’s books in touch and sound editions are designed to be shared with sighted friends and family featuring firm favourites such as The Very hungry Caterpillar and The Gruffalo. There are also teachers and topical packs to help with lessons and learning, covering subjects like the Greeks, Weather, World War 2, Thomas Tank Engine, and Music. By providing pictures that can be “felt” in packs, Albums and books, with audio commentary, Living Paintings enables people who cannot see to enjoy a wide range of visual treats, be they well loved children’s books, famous works of art, gardening, the natural world, or great buildings. And every item in this charity’s library is loaned and posted for free. One new topical pack for the summer will feature the Olympic Games, with contributions from some of Britain’s Greatest Athletes and another on British wildlife will soon be available. With over 7000 registered blind and partially sighted people in Hampshire and many more who are not registered, there is a high chance that you will know someone who could benefit from this free library service. If so please tell them about Living Paintings as all they need do to become a member is write, call, email or visit our website to join.
